Value Investing Conferences

I think that a Value Investing Conference is such an important resource to individual value investors that I am devoting a page to it. I will update this page as new information becomes available.

A value investing conference is a gathering of the best investment minds and scholars to educate and inspire professional investors, students and individual value investors about the science and art of value investing. Some of the following are charity events than none the less draw speakers who are the top of investment world.

Top 7 Value Investing Conferences

October 2011

Value Investing Congress

The Value Investing Congress’s 7th Annual meeting in New York is bound to be an exciting venue for Value Investors. This is one of the pilgrimage’s that an individual value investor should make if they can afford it. I have been to the Los Angeles version in May and am very much looking forward to my trip to New York in October. The next conference will be held  in New York City on October 17th and 18th, 2011.

The rock star hedge fund managers that will be speaking include the following:

Bill Ackman, Pershing Square – the headline grabbing Hedge fund Manager.

David Einhorn, Greenlight Capital- Hedge fund manager and author of Fooling Some of the People all of the Time. Has been in the headlines for some of his short positions most recently St. Joes where he is up against Bruce Berkowitz.

Joel Greenblatt, Gotham Capital – Author of three books includingone of my favorite investing books, How to be a Stock Market Genius (yeah I know it is a dumb title, but it is a really good book) The Little Book that Beats the Market and his most recent book the Big Secret for the Small Investor. He is also the man behind the Magic Formula Investing concept. Did I mention he is a phenomenally successfuly investor?

James S. Chanos , Kynikos Associates – a legendary short seller. Even if you are not a short seller, you can learn from their attention to detail and laying out a contrarian case for why the market is wrong.

Leon Cooperman, Omega Advisors, Inc.

James Crichton,  Scout Capital Management

Michael Kao,  Akanthos Capital Management

Alexander Roepers , Atlantic Investment Management.

Whitney Tilson & Glenn Tongue, T2 Partners

You can get a $500 discount for the Value Investing Congress if you purchase your ticket by October 5th by following this link.

Excellence in Investing Conference – San Francisco

This is the West Coast version patterned after the Ira Sohn foundation fundraiser held in New York. It is being held on October 19th. Although the fund managers speaking are not the household names that some of the other investment conferences the proceeds are donated to education and other children’s causes. The primary beneficiaries of the 2011 conference are Leadership Public Schools (LPS), The Posse Foundation, The Sohn Conference Foundation, and Summer Search. This event is $1000 donation.

November 2011

Great Investors Best Idea’s 5th Annual Investment Symposium

This even which is scheduled for November 8th in Dallas, Texas. It is a one day charitable event that looks amazing. All proceeds raised through this event are donated to The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research and the Vickery Meadow Youth Development Foundation. It features the following speakers:

Bill Ackman, Pershing Square – Founder and CEO. Mostly long but some short investing in a fundamental investment

David Einhorn, Greenlight Capital- Hedge fund manager and author of Fooling Some of the People all of the Time. Has been in the headlines for some of his short positions most recently St. Joes where he is up against Bruce Berkowitz.

Bruce Berkowitz- Fairholme Capital – Founder and Chief Investment Officer. Although Einhorn are publically civil toward each other who knows if the sparks will fly.

Mario Gabelli- Gamco Securities – Chairman and CEO.

Boone Pickens – BP Capital – Corporate Raider and sledge hammer for the natural gas industry (coincidence that he has large holdings?)

This event requires a $1000 donation.

AAII Investor Conference

The American Association of Individual Investors Investor Conference is scheduled for Nov. 10-12 2011 in Las Vegas. While this conference is not specifically a value investing conference it does feature some value investing notables, including the key note speaker Joel Greenblatt who will be speaking about his most recent book The Big Secret for the Small Investor. Other Speakers include:

Christine Benz – Director of Personal Finance, Morningstar- I don’t always agree with Christine Benz, she does espouse the dollar cost averaging concept that I abhor, she is knowledgable.

Marilyn Cohen -Columnist for Forbes

Chuck Jaffe -Senior Columnist, MarketWatch

Ken Fisher – CEO & Founder, Fisher Investments

The other advantage of this Investing conference is that it is priced for value investors at $295 for AAII members. THIS VALUE INVESTING CONFERENCE IS SOLD OUT.

February 2012

Columbia Investment Management Conference

The 15th Annual Columbia Investment Management Conference organized by the Columbia Investment Management Association (CIMA) should be held some time in February 2012 at Columbia University in New York. It is another great platform for exchanging ideas in value investing. Distinguished speakers at the last conference held on February 4th, 2011 included:

Cheryl Einhorn – Columbia Business School,

Sarah Ketterer – Causeway Capital Management

John Spears – Tweedy Browne Company

I will add a link when the conference date and speakers have been set.

May 2012

Value Investor Conference

The 2012 Value Investor Conference will be held in  Omaha on May 3 – 4, 2012. They claim to be the “original value investing conference.” The event features speakers such as:

Robert Hagstrom, author of the Warren Buffet Way and fund manager at Legg Mason,

Pat Dorsey formerly Director of  Equity Research at Morningstar and author of the Little Book that Builds Wealth.

The Value Investing Conference is held right before the Berkshire Hathaway annual meeting and thus attracts part of the throng making the pilgrimage to Omaha to hear Warren Buffett and Charlie Munger preach the gospel of Investing. I am working on getting a discount for my readers, but nothing yet. Check back in the next month or so.

June 2012

Morningstar Investment Conference

This annual investing conference is not strictly for equities only, but it definitely has a value investing orientation. The 2011 speakers included such investment luminaries as:

Bill Gross – Pimco – the biggest bond fund in the world

Bruce Berkowitz- Fairholme Capital – Morningstar’s fund manager of the decade.

The conference is attended by over 1000 investors, students and is likely to be scheduled for June of 2012. I will add a link when the conference date has been established.

Disclosures: I have no relationship with the Value Investor Conference, AAII conference, Morningstar or the Columbia Investment Conference, but I am a media sponsor of the Value Investing Congress which I have attended and highly recommend.
