A Screener for Net Net Stocks

Posted on | August 10, 2009 | No Comments

The first hurdle you face as a value investor, is finding the information you need to make profitable investments.  How do you find  Companies to invest in? Since we are exploring the ins and outs of the VXGN buy from last week we will explore gathering information for a Net Net Stock. There are a lot of sources to find companies to invest in. But many people who want the Lazy Man’s Way to Riches, including , well me. They are looking for shortcuts.

Rather than read all of the annual reports you can start with a stock screener. As its name indicates, it screens stocks for characteristics you are looking for. You think a stock should be bald, blue eyed and tall, then you type in the criteria and  and do a search. Oh wait , that is an online dating service.

Since we looking at a Net Net the first place is to try Graham Investor for Net Net stocks.  Why here? It is free. And it is focused on the area we are searching for. Unfortunately, the screener is a very loose. The screener often turns up stocks that are no longer Net Nets. Or it will fail to pick up a company that has a Net Net stock. A case in point is that this screener does not pick up VaxGen (VXGN).  You will need to do a lot of leg work to make this site useful.

At Guru Focus as part of their premium subscription package they have what they call a Benjamin Graham Net Current Asset Value Investing Screener. It can also filter separately profitable companies from unprofitable ones. Not as many now as in March. None worth buying because there is no margin of safety.

But, you are a small time investor, so let’s stick to free sources of information for now. Follow this link if you are interested in reading about more Value Investing Screeners.
